Zelma Alice Monkres

Leon – Graveside Services for Mrs. Zelma Alice (Barnes) Monkres, 91, is scheduled for 2:00 PM Wed. September 14, 2011 at Leon Cemetery with Rev. Jimmy May officiating. Services are under the care and direction of Alexander Funeral Home of Wilson.

Zelma was born November 29, 1919 at Portsmouth, VA to the late Ira and Margaret Barnes. She departed this life Friday September 9, 2011 at a Healthcare facility in Portsmouth, VA.

Zelma was raised in Portsmouth graduating from High School there in 1937. She met and soon married Mr. James Bennett “Jim” Monkres. They met at the Skippy Peanut Butter Manufacturing Plant where they were both employed. They later moved to California and eventually relocated to the Ft. Worth and Dallas area, where Zelma was employed by Republic Insurance from which she retired after many years in the clerical dept. Zelma was a member of the Cottage Place Methodist Church of Portsmouth.

Preceding her in death is her Parents; Husband Jim Monkres, June 30, 1979; Step Daughter, Jacque (Monkres) Miller, 2007; Grandchildren, Jaryl Arthur, 2004, Jamie Arthur, 1985, Charla Jean Arthur, 2007; Two Sisters, Margaret and Singie; and 2 Brothers, Sonny and Brother.

Survivors include Stepchildren; Pierce Monkres and wife Sandy of Lake Konowa, TX, Joan Arthur of Ardmore, Jeleen Sumrall of Ardmore; Grandchildren, Janett Salazar, Joni and Marvin Conway, Jackie Dale and Vicky Miller, Jaylin and Kelly Miller, Jimmy Monkres, Paula Monkres, Joie Monkres and Josh Monkres; 13 Great Grandchildren; 26 Great Great Grandchildren; 4 Great Great Great Grandchildren; Cousins, Harry and Barry Jenkins of Durham, North Carolina.

Casket Bearers will be Jackie Dale Miller, Jimmy Monkres, John Blackwood, David Gilliam, Tim Arthur, and Derek Salazar.

Family visitation will be from 12 – 1 pm Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home in Wilson.
