Velma - Celebration of Life services for Mrs. Ruth Estelle (Cowan) Pogue, 94, of Velma are scheduled for 2:00 PM Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016 at the First Baptist Church of Velma with Rev. Jeremy Higle officiating. Interment will follow at the New Velma Cemetery. Services are under the care and direction of Alexander- Gray Velma Chapel.
Ruth was born on Dec. 15, 1922 at Velma to the late Mr. Louis P. Cowan and Mrs. Velma Lee (McCauley) Cowan. She departed this life Saturday, Dec. 24, 2016 at Marlow.
Ruth was raised in the Velma area attending school at Santa Fe, Alma, Loco and then high school at Velma. During her 11th grade year she married Mr. Vernie Murl Pogue on May 7, 1939. They shared 59 wonderful years of marriage together residing in this area. Ruth was an excellent homemaker and housewife. She was always very dedicated to her family and praised for being a wonderful cook. She always stayed very busy with her hands always crocheting and enjoyed watching basketball. Vernie preceded her in death on May 14, 1998. Since then, Ruth has enjoyed traveling to Branson where she enjoyed the shows. She also cherished the times with her family, especially with her grandchildren. Ruth was a member of the First Baptist Church of Velma.
Also preceding her in death were her Parents; Uncle and Aunt whom raised her, Hugh and Bertha Cowan; brother, Robert Cowan; daughters, Vernell Maston and Sharon Peavler; grandson, Gary McLemore; granddaughter, Angela Dickerson and son-in-law, Imon Newman.
Survivors include two daughters, Marsha Newman and Debbie Locke and husband Gary, all of Duncan; son in law, Ronnie Peavler of Velma; grandchildren, Bruce Maston, Denise Pierce and husband Trent, Chris Dickerson and Brett Peavler; 16 great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.
Casket Bearers are Tommy Sanchez, Chris Dickerson, Gary Locke, Ronnie Peavler, Nate Colwell and Tanner Dickerson.
