Leon – Graveside Services for Mr. Roy Edward Smith, 65, of Leon are scheduled for 10:00 AM Monday August 1, 2011 at the Leon Cemetery with Military Chaplain Alva Bennett officiating and Ft. Sill Casualty Team providing Full Military Burial honors. Services are under the care and direction of Alexander Funeral Home of Wilson.
Roy was born August 20, 1945 at Woodville, OK to the late Mr. Ollie Roy Smith and Mrs. Lena W. (Stubblefield) Smith. He departed this life Wed. July 27, 2011 at his home in Leon.
Roy was raised at Madill living on the Riley Goodman Dairy Farm. He joined the Army National Guard at as a young man on August 24, 1962 at Madill. He and the former Ms. Barbara Ellen Howard were united in marriage on April 2, 1963 at Gainesville, TX.
He later joined the Regular Army and was actively enlisted for 31 years, receiving his honorable discharge on April 4, 1993. During his military career he served in Vietnam and Germany and was stationed all over the United States. His military occupation was a Motor Transport Operator and some of his decorations and medals awarded during his service included, an Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal/ Bronze Star Medal/ National Defense Service Medal with One Bronze Service Star/ Army Good Conduct Medal/ Vietnam Service Medal/ Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal and an Army Service Ribbon. After his retirement he and Barbara made their home in Leon and Roy worked some as a civilian truck driver and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching television and reading pocketbook westerns.
Preceding him in death are his Parents, Son, Randy Edward Smith, Sister Ethel Ladd and Grandson Michael Ruoff.
Survivors include his wife Barbara of the home in Leon; Daughters, Brenda Smith of Gainesville, TX, Kathy Smith of Leon, and Tina Smith of Burneyville; Son, Ollie Smith and wife Gwen of Lebanon; Sisters, Jossie Barnes of Lancaster, SC., and Lirene Salpetro of Texas; Brother, Clifford “Doc” Prazan and wife Mickey of Colbert; 15 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren and 2 others on their way.
Pallbearers will the enlisted Army Personnel of the Ft. Sill Casualty Team.
A family visitation will be held Sunday evening from 5 to 7 pm at Alexander Funeral Home of Wilson.
