Newport - Funeral services for Mr. Roy "Dog" Dewane Ashley, 79, of Newport are scheduled for 10:00 AM Saturday, July 23, 2022 at the Wilson Assembly of God Church with Rev. Steve Gardner officiating. Interment will follow at Newport Cemetery. Services are under the direction and care of Alexander Gray Funeral Home of Wilson.
Roy was born on Sept. 13, 1942 at Newport to the late Mr. James Preston "Shorty" Ashley and Mrs. Mildred Estella (Pruitt) Ashley. He departed this life on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at Ardmore.
Roy was raised at Newport attending school at Rexroat. He married the former Ms. Syble Whatley on Sept. 12, 1960 at Marietta. They lived various places following work settling at their home in Newport in 1976.
Roy was employed within the Oilfield and later as an equipment operator for numerous years before, becoming a truckdriver. Roy loved driving trucks, mostly hauling propane and anhydrous gas. He drove for Acord Transportation for more than 30 years.
If you knew Roy, then you realized quickly that he loved to aggravate. His many friends were always trying to prepare for the next big laugh. During his retirement he enjoyed working on his place, riding his tractor and most recently touring the countryside on his motorcycle.
Preceding him in death are his parents; his wife, Syble, Jan. 19, 2014; daughter, Tina Marie Ashley, July 14, 1979; brothers, Preston, Gerry and James "Tip" Ashley; sisters, Judy Matthews, Joice Lobdell and Loice Ashley.
Survivors include his daughters, Belinda Callaway and husband Donald of Dickson and Cynthia "Bug" Pense and spouse Donald "Duck" Bailey of Newport; son, Larry Ashley and wife Tammie of Newport; brother in law, Jerry Matthews of Springer; sisters in law, Diane Ashley of Ardmore and Vivian Ashley of Kellyville; grandchildren, Donald Callaway and wife Heather, Randal Callaway, Jonathon Callaway, Christina Pense, Melody Pense, Ronald Bailey, Kammie Tampas and husband Mark, Pamela House, Samantha House, Michael House and wife Berta and Tabatha Neeley husband A.J.; 21 great grandchildren and numerous other family and friends.
Casket bearers will be Mike Stevens, Phillip Ward, Terry Davidson, Michael Lemons, Jimmy Clark and Tino Quintana.
Honorary bearers are all of his nephews.
Family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 pm Friday evening at the funeral home in Wilson.
