Rosa Nell Smith

Graveside services for Rosa Nell England Smith will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, in Ratliff City Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Cox and the Rev. Dwight Hawkins officiating.

Born on Sept. 22, 1931, in Seminole to James “Jim” John and Mattie “Pat” Lee Bull England, she died on Sept. 6, 2008, in her Ratliff City home. She was preceded in death by her parents; and parents-in-law, Andrew and Effie Smith.

She married Billy Paul Smith on Nov. 4, 1950, in Healdton.

Nell was a faithful and loving wife to “BP” for more than 57 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ratliff City. She practiced her faith and moral beliefs daily in the ways she raised her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spoke daily to her sisters, Billie and Bobbye, keeping up with each other’s news about family.

Nell’s kitchen was always prepared and opened. No one was ever turned away or left hungry. Her cooking abilities were well known throughout the region. Her generosity didn’t stop with food. She had literally taken the dress off her back and given it to another in need. She gave her tithes joyfully and freely helped anyone in need.

Twenty-four children were born calling her Mema, yet many more lovingly called her Mema. She was a fan of the Fox Foxes for years, as she fed teams before games.

Our wife and mother was the most unselfish, determined and strong woman we have known. Her love for her family never faulted, even though we often did. She praised us for our triumphs, disciplined us when we needed it, taught us right from wrong and loved us always. She is loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Paul Smith, of the home; son, Dennis Smith and his wife, Pam, Ratliff City; daughters, Connie Wilkins and her husband, Tony, Ratliff City, Debbie Smith and husband, Donnie, Ninnekah; sisters, Billie Bolles, Ardmore, and Bobbye Pender, Healdton; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bearers are Derik Smith, Todd Smith, Blair Smith, Toby Wilkins, Drew Smith and Ara Bush. Honorary bearers are Lonnie Carter and Leslie Jones.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Ratliff City Building Fund, P.O. Box 146, Ratliff City, OK 73481.

Visitation will be fro 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at Alexander Funeral Home in Ratliff City.
