Roger M. Porterfield

Healdton - Funeral services for Mr. Roger M. Porterfield, 72, are scheduled for 2:00 P.M., Monday, February 13, 2017 at the East Lincoln Church of Christ of Healdton with Glen Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Bomar Point Cemetery in Wilson. Services are under the care and direction of Alexander Funeral Home in Wilson.

Mr. Roger M. Porterfield was born at Waurika on June 6, 1944 to the late Mr. H.P. and Mrs. Ineta (Mason) Porterfield. He departed from this life this earthly life early in the morning on Friday, February 10, 2017, at his home near Wilson.

The family moved to Healdton in 1945, and Roger attended public school in Healdton for 12 years, graduating in 1962. He attended OSU Tech in Okmulgee, OK for 3 years, graduating in 1965 with a degree in electrical maintenance. He then accepted a job with Shell Pipeline Corporation in Cushing, OK, that same year and in 1966 transferred to the Pasadena District near Houston, TX.

Roger and the former Ms. LaVerne Smith were united in marriage on July 9, 1966 at the East Texas Street Church of Christ of Healdton, and they observed their 50th wedding anniversary 6 months ago. To this union were born 2 children, Sara Jan and Brent. Roger transferred back to Healdton with Shell in 1974 and took an early retirement from Shell when the pipeline through Healdton sold in 1992. He began as a self-employed carpenter and worked in that capacity until poor health forced him to retired completely in 2010.

Roger was an avid gardener known for his beautiful yard and garden.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Richard, Bobby, Jimmy and Roy.

Roger is survived by his wife LaVerne of the home; children, Sara Hickman and husband Barry of Wilson and Brent Porterfield and wife Jennifer of Lone Grove; his three grandchildren he loved dearly, Jacob Hickman, Clayton and Abby Porterfield; brother, Walter Porterfield and wife Peggy of Healdton; sisters in laws, Wanda, Pat, Patsy and Janie; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Casket bearers will be Mike Porterfield, Kent Porterfield, Chad Porterfield, Eric Porterfield, Zach Porterfield and James Nix.

Honorary bearers will be Hoot Gilbert and Jim Bill Tolbert.
