Wilson – Funeral Services for Mr. Melvin Eugene “Smooth” Vernon, 83 yrs, are scheduled for 10:30 AM Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at the Alexander Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenny McMath officiating and Tim Young assisting. Interment will follow at the Vernon Family Cemetery near Simon. Services are under the direction of Alexander Funeral Home of Wilson.
Smooth was born December 31, 1926 at Keltner, Ok to the late Mr. Bradford Carl Vernon and Mrs. Cleo (Adcock) Vernon. He departed this life Saturday, December 25, 2010 at the Ardmore Veterans Home receiving his Christmas wish, to be with his wife Meady Mae this year.
Smooth was a longtime resident of Love County, being raised there and attending a 1 room schoolhouse at Abner. He was a very accomplished mechanic ever since the age of five when he first worked on an engine overhaul for his father. He and the former Ms. Meady Mae Nipp were united in marriage May 14, 1947. Smooth was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the conclusion of WWII and reenlisted during the Korean Conflict. He was part of the mechanized tank division and received his honorable discharge for his service in 1952. Smooth and his family resided mostly in this area all of his working years, however as an employed as a pipe liner, smooth worked all over the United States. After he retired from the pipe liners union, Smooth continued to operate his dozer and mechanic for years just finally retiring some three years ago. It has been said that Smooth was always the best Dozer Operator in the area, who would often rather work on his dozer than operate it. He will be missed most of all for his delighted humor, his strong work ethic and his love for his family. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Preceding him in Death are his Parents, his wife Meady Mae – April 22, 1999, Sisters, Pearl, Ruby, Claudine, Brother, Olen “Turkey”, and a grandson Christopher Hayes.
Survivors include his Daughter, Connie King and husband Clifford of Wilson, Debbie Hayes and husband James of Ardmore, Danell Bray and husband Danny of Wilson and Denise Menke and husband Jim of Ardmore. Sons, David Vernon and wife Lois, Dale Vernon and wife Judy, Dennis Vernon and wife Kathryn and Dean Vernon all of Wilson. Sisters, Ollie Mae Kimbrell and husband Louis and Jean Poland and husband Dee, both of Amarillo, TX. 30 Grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. Numerous other family and friends.
Pallbearers will be David Vernon, Dale Vernon, Dennis Vernon, Dean Vernon, Bill Russell and Ricky Vernon.
Honorary Bearers will be Grandchildren.
Family visitation will be from 6-8 pm Monday, December 27, 2010 at the funeral home in Wilson.
