Before you begin reading this, just know that if he'd been handed this long-winded tribute, his first reaction would've been to ask "Is this going to be a long story?" Sarcasm was his love language. He enjoyed offbeat humor, a good laugh, and he had a smile that could light up the room. He was a devoted husband, an amazing father, and the world's greatest Pappy. The world was a better place for the 62 years he was in it.
Mark Dale Bass was born on September 26, 1958 in Duncan, OK. On that day, nobody could've known what an amazing human had been brought into this world.
As a kid he enjoyed spending time with his grandparents, affectionately known as Gran and Pappy, on their farm in south Texas.
At 15 years old while attending John Jay High School in San Antonio, TX, he met a girl named Peggy who knew he was the one the moment she laid eyes on him and he loved to tell everyone that he only agreed to go out with her because she chased him until he got tired! Mark and Peggy were married on October 16, 1976 at Canyon Lake, TX with family and friends present. They welcomed their first child into the world on January 20, 1978; a baby boy named Mark Dale Bass, Jr. Three years later, on September 30, 1981, they welcomed a bouncing baby girl, Jessica Sue, into this world.
They built a beautiful life over their 45 years together. They enjoyed fishing, travelling, and making memories with their two children and twelve grandchildren. Two of Mark's favorite places to be were out on the lake fishing and walking the white sandy beaches of Florida.
Mark was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents and his father C.J. Bass.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 45 years, Peggy Sue, his son Mark Jr. and Casie Bass and their children: Mark III (Trey), Toby, Hunter, Zoey, Tristan, Nathaniel and Nathaniel's two sons Maverick and Gerald.
He is also survived by his daughter Jessica (Bass) and Kyle Watson and their daughters Jemma, Sloane, Ryver, and Willow.
Along with his wife, children, and grandchildren, Mark is survived by Peggy's parents Roy (Buddy) and Winona (Susie) Garnand who in all their years together never referred to him as their son-in-law, but affectionately as "son" and Peggy's brothers James, Bobby, and Roy Garnand. He was also a proud friend and bonus dad to Harold (Buddy) Collins, Jr. and Micah Steven Salinas (Stevie).
Mark lived his life with no regrets and if you were lucky enough to have him call you friend or family, then you were rich in ways that most people will never know. He was strong and he fought hard until the very end, but unfortunately on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 7:38pm surrounded by his loving wife, son, daughter, and oldest grandson, he took his final breath.
The world lost one of the good ones, but was a better place for the 62 years he was here.
It was Mark's final wish that he not be buried and no services be held, so the family has chosen instead to have a celebration of his life at a later date.
