Healdton - Funeral Services for Mr. James Lowell "Jim" Miller, 90, western artist of Reck are scheduled for 2:00 PM Monday, May 18, 2015 at the 1st Missionary Baptist Church of Healdton with Pastor Kevin Pridemore officiating. Interment will follow at the Hewitt Cemetery in Wilson. Services are under the care and direction of Alexander Funeral Home of Wilson.Jim was born October 29, 1924 at Gregory, South Dakota to the late Mr. Adrian Coy Miller and Mrs. Neva M. (Weeks) Miller. He departed this life Thursday, May 14, 2015 at the Ardmore Veterans Center.Shortly after being born in South Dakota his family moved to Missouri and then Oklahoma. He grew up in the Osage cattle country near Pawhuska and was inspired by this area as well the Osage Indians.Jim volunteered for the Navy during WWII prior to graduating high school and after the War he moved to Colorado where he worked in the Coal mines, in timber and on a ranch. While working as a lumberjack, a tree fell on him and broke his back. During this time while recuperating, Jim received a painting set from his Mother and it was then he became serious about his oil painting. Moving back to Oklahoma in the early to mid 1950's Jim continued to paint for about 15 years while working full time in the Oil Industry. This was followed by a couple of years as a sign painter. After attending an art show where some artist were displaying bronze, Jim was able to obtain some clay from an artist and soon his career as a sculptor was launched. In 1973 he quit his job and began making his living in art. What might be work to others has been the joy of Jim's life. He married Ms. Emma Emerson on April 29, 1989 at Rexroat Baptist Church. They were members of the 1st Missionary Baptist Church of Healdton where Jim had been a member for 59 years.Preceding him in death was his father, Adrian Coy Miller and mother, Neva M. Johnson.Survivors include his loving wife Emma of the home; daughter, Terry Henson and spouse Blue Thomas of Albuquerque, NM; two sons, Dennis Miller and wife Loretta of Ardmore and Mark Miller and wife Sheila of Choctaw; sister, Patsy Gant, and her late husband Jerry of Dothan, AL; brother, Leo C. Miller and wife Barbara of Slidell, LA; children by marriage, Lynn Bolles and Brenda Davis; 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; numerous other family, church family and a multitude of friends.
Casket Bearers are Al Crawford, Tom Roberts, Clint Davidson, Terrel Silvers, Terry Hicks, Ken Barrett and Robert Poteet.
Honorary Bearers are all of Jim's friends.
Family visitation will be held from 2 pm to 4 pm Sunday at Alexander Funeral Home of Wilson.Condolences may be sent online at alexanderfuneralhome.org
