Jerry Lane Gunter

Wilson - Funeral Services for Mr. Jerry Lane Gunter, 71 of Cheek are scheduled for 10:00 AM Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021 at Alexander Gray Funeral Chapel of Wilson with Rev. David Gardner officiating. Interment will follow at Keller Cemetery north of Wilson.

Jerry was born as the later of twin boys on the evening of June 8th, 1950 at the Hardy Sanitarium in Ardmore to the late Mr. Joseph Roscoe Gunter and Mrs. Bernice (Smithers) Gunter. He departed this life on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at the hospital in Ardmore.

Jerry was raised at Keller attending school at Rexroat Elementary and then Wilson Schools graduating in 1968. He was a star offensive football running back in high school , which earned a full scholarship to East Central University. There he played offensive guard for ECU for four years and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education and Industrial Arts. Jerry married the former Coleen Bates on Jan. 8, 1972 at the Rexroat Baptist Church.

Upon graduating from college, he worked for a couple of electrical companies, then Uniroyal, before teaching at Lone Grove Schools as a drafting and industrial arts teacher and football and track coach. Most of his years were employed for ARCO, as a mechanic and in concurrence owned and operated Gunter's Salvage and Wrecker service, which is still in operation today. He retired from ARCO in 1994 and continued working with his passion, building things, welding and restoring trucks. Jerry was a member of the Cheek Baptist Church.

Preceding him in death are his parents; infant brother and sister, Billy Wayne and Leta Joyce Gunter; sisters, Velma Kathryn "Cricket" Reeder, Janice Cartwright and Margie Ware.

Survivors include his loving wife Coleen of the home; sons, Brian Gunter of Cheek and Jeff Gunter and wife Susan of Burneyville; grandchildren, Ethan Cole and Jerry Don Gunter; sisters, Mary Lynn Stanley of Gilmer, TX, Nancy Aly of Ardmore, Athella Gunter of Wilson, and Beverly McMillan and husband Phil of Ardmore; brothers, Roscoe Gunter and wife Frieda of Wilson, Jim Gunter and wife Mary Ann of Poolville, Bobby Gunter of Ardmore, Ronald Gunter of Wilson and twin brother Larry Gunter and wife Nancy of Wilson; numerous other family and friends.

Casket Bearers are Brian Gunter, Jeff Gunter, Joseph Gunter, Larry Gunter, Jr., Brad Gunter and Cooter Pender.

Honorary bearers are Roscoe, Jim, Bobby, Ronald and Larry Gunter, Phil McMillan, Erron Gunter, Kenneth Reeder and Dale Gunter,

Family visitation 6 - 8 pm Tuesday evening at Alexander Gray Funeral Home Chapel of Wilson.
