James "Jimmy" Liddell Mayes

June 14, 1953 — April 29, 2018

James “Jimmy” Liddell Mayes Jr. passed away peacefully on Sunday April 29, 2018 at his home in Wilson at the age of 64 years old. Jimmy was born June 14, 1953 at the US Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, Illinois to US Army Lt. Colonel James L. Mayes Sr and US Army Captain Helen M. Groshong.

Jimmy was raised in Springer, Oklahoma where he attended school and graduated in 1971. After school Jimmy enlisted and served 6 years with the Army National Guard following in the long line of military services of his family. Jimmy was always up for an adventure or challenge, which he found through his various jobs. The majority of late teens through his 30’s were spent working on various oil rigs throughout the states and even a stint at an offshore rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Jim continued to work in various hard-manual labor jobs including manufacturing, HVAC, and welding. Even when he was forced to retire early due to health he continued to tinker and find projects around the house – he always had to be busy.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his wife of many years Kay Peters.

Jimmy is survived by his children Tiffany Mayes, Carrie Mayes, Jason Potter, Joshua Palmer; Grandchildren Shae-lyn and Clinton Easterwood, Gabby Mayes, Demi Mayes; Great-granddaughter Olivia Easterwood; Siblings Peggy and her husband Larry Proffit, Lynda and her husband Ken Byslma; and numerous nieces and nephews including Jaylynn and Michael. Special acknowledgement to lifelong friend Bill W. whom they had an intermittent relationship for over 40 years, these last 12 years Bill W. was a constant source of encouragement, strength, and hope.

Jimmy will be laid to rest Friday May 4, 2018 at Woodford cemetery following services at the Alexander Funeral Home in Wilson, OK at 2:00 pm. We will not morn Jimmy’s passing rather celebrate the life he lived and the love he gave to so many.

Serving as pallbearers will be Steve Ford, David Caldwell, Kenny Burden, Tom Valliere, Ken Bylsma and Dean Blackwell.

A family visitation is scheduled for Thursday evening from 6-8 P.M. at Alexander Funeral Home in Wilson. Online condolences may be made to www.alexanderfuneralhome.org.
