Lone Grove – Private Services are scheduled for Mr. Fred Richard Taliaferro, 89, longtime resident of Lone Grove with Rev. Morgan Ashworth officiating. Interment will be at the Taliaferro Rest Cemetery in Lone Grove. Services are under the direction and care of Alexander Funeral Home of Wilson.
Fred was born March 12, 1922 at Lone Grove to the late Mr. Oris W. Taliaferro and Mrs. Annie (Parker) Taliaferro. He departed this life Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at Ardmore.
Fred was raised in Lone Grove and had resided there all of his years with the exception of his college and military years. He was a strong continuance of the Taliaferro family presence in Lone Grove stretching back to when his father, Mr. Oris W. Taliaferro, moved to this area and purchased the building that is still known as Taliaferro Grocery store of Lone Grove. Fred graduated from Lone Grove High School in 1940 and then attended college where he played college basketball. He was also a member of the United States Navy serving actively during post WWII and received his honorable discharge in on April 10, 1946.
Fred returned to college and completed his degree and soon began his teaching career at several of the area schools. He and the former Ms. Deloris Blassingame were united in marriage on April 10, 1948 at Gainesville, TX. They made their home in Lone Grove, while Fred educated students at many of the area schools including Zaneis, Wilson and Lone Grove, retiring after 24 years of teaching in 1973. He then began working at Jim’s Lumberyard and was the manager of his rental properties.
Preceding him in death are his parents; Sister, Selmer Hammitt and Brother; Orville Taliaferro.
Survivors include his wife Deloris of the home; Daughter, Joan Taliaferro of Lone Grove; Sons, Errol Taliaferro and wife Charlotte, Steve Taliaferro and Jimmy Taliaferro and wife Wilda, all of Lone Grove; Brothers, Edwin Taliaferro and wife Bobbie and W.A. “Dub” Taliaferro and wife Louise, all of Lone Grove; Sister Jerilene Willis of Lone Grove; 9 Grandchildren and 14 Great Grandchildren and numerous other family and friends.
Casket Bearers will be his Grandsons Ty, Eric, Adam and Cody.
A family visitation will be held from 6-8 pm Thursday evening, August 4, 2011 at Alexander Funeral Home Chapel in Wilson.
