Charles Long

Ringling – Funeral Services for Mr. Charles Long, 92, of Ringling are scheduled for 2:00 PM Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Alexander Funeral Home Chapel in Ringling with Bill Renfro officiating. Interment will follow at the Bomar Pt. Cemetery in Wilson.


Charles was born July 7, 1922 in Cushing, Texas, to the late Mr. Jesse and Mrs. Delia Clifton Long. He passed from this life Thursday, May 28, 2015 at his home in Ringling.


Charles attended public school in Goodrich, Texas, graduating in 1940. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army on July, 24, 1941. He served for 4 years and was honorably discharged on September 27, 1945. He served in the 49th Field Artillery Battalion attaining the rank of Sergeant. He served as Chief of Section, training soldiers under him in proper operation of the howitzer. He operated in combat for 24 months, serving in the Aleutian Islands and the Southern Philippines during World War II. His honors included the American Defense Service Medal, Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, and the Asiatic –Pacific Campaign Medal. Charles married the former Betty Jean Loveless in 1955. She preceded him in death in 2002. Charles was a welder by trade and worked for Total Petroleum for 32 years retiring in 1984. He enjoyed several retirement years at Lake Texoma fishing, gardening, and fellowshipping with all his many friends at Kingston.


Charles was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty Jean, 5 brothers, and 1 sister.


He is survived by one daughter Debbie Thurman and husband Randy of Ringling; one son, Danny Long and wife Wanda of Iowa Park, Texas; grandchildren Randy Wayne Thurman II of Wichita Falls, Brett Thurman of Wilson, Kimberly Long of Wichita Falls, Danny Bryan Long of Healdton; and one sister, Alma Rainey, of Wilmer, Texas, numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.


Family visitation will be held from 6pm to 8pm Friday at the Alexander Funeral Home Chapel of Ringling.
