Billie Carlene Haynes was born at Wilson, Ok in May of 1938 to the late Claude and Lula Smith. She departed this life on February 21, 2016. She was raised and attended school in Wilson, later marrying Roy in December of 1954. They soon moved to California and then to New Mexico having three children along the way. They came back home to Wilson in 1969 and she has lived there ever since. Although she and Roy didn't remain married, they became friends again and would often have coffee together a few Sunday's a month along with his brother Dub.
She worked at several jobs but finally settled at the Daylight Donut Shop in Wilson, purchasing it in May of 1975. She owned and operated it for 32 years, later retiring due to health reasons, then selling the business in 2007. She really enjoyed all of her 'regulars' that would come in daily for a cup of coffee, one of her 'fabulous' donuts, and maybe just a little gossip too. Billie, also known to many as the Donut Lady, got to watch a lot of the children around Wilson grow up and start bringing in children of their own for chocolate milk and a bag of donut holes.
Other than when one of her many grandchildren or great grandchildren were born, one of her favorite and most proud moments, was being chosen to participate as Grand Marshall in September of 2005 for the Wilson Fall Festival Parade.
Billie loved to give out hugs and telling everyone to “have a happy day”. She has been heard many times telling someone that tried to shake her hand 'We don't shake hands around here, we give hugs'. She never met a stranger and was loved by all that knew her. Billie was also known for making the most delicious hamburgers around.
Due to health issues, she was unable to get out much, but Billie still loved to play bingo, play the slots and getting to visit her family and many dear friends when able. During nice weather she could be found on her back porch watching the rabbits, squirrels and humming birds.
Throughout the years, she helped dozens of people that were down on their luck. She helped those in need of a place to stay, money for food and gas, or help with a bill. She had a good heart and was very generous.
She liked to tell people that she was 'a tough ole bird' but in her heart she always knew that even the toughest ole birds must go Home to roost.
Billie was preceded in death by her parents Lula and Claude Smith, former husband and dear friend Roy, two sons Rick and David Haynes, two sisters, Peggy Powers and Rita Chapman and her youngest grandson Colt.
She is survived by her daughter Linda, sister Anne Hagenbuch of Oregon, 6 grandchildren, Jamie, Jesse, Carrie and Siaosi, Monique and Danny, Casey, Dub and Erica and also 13 great grandchildren Jon, Alex, Xavier, Ethan, Hayden, Anjelle, Macey, Kylee, Jayke, Madden, Sio, Jagger, Kynslei, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.
The Haynes family would like to thank all of the wonderful nurses and nurse aides at Cross Timbers Hospice of Ardmore, Ideal Home Care of Healdton and St John Home Health in Tulsa. Thank you all so much for your kind, caring compassion and help during these last few years. Also, thanks to the other wonderful doctors and nurses that treated her and helped her during her many stays at the hospitals. We would also like to thank her dear neighbors and friends that helped her with her lawn and other things around the house that she could no longer do. They never hesitated to assist her with anything.
Per Billie’s request, a memorial service will not be held at this time. She wanted everyone to celebrate her life and remember her as she was when she could still dance a jig.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cross Timbers Hospice 207 C Street NW, Ardmore, OK 73401, Ideal Home Care 11049 Hwy 76, Healdton, OK 73438 or St. John Heart Failure Clinic 1919 S Wheeling Ave Suite 504, Tulsa, OK 74104.
