Alvie Vernie Hawkins

Ringling – Funeral Services for Rev. Alvie Vernie Hawkins, 88, of Ringling are scheduled at 10:00 AM Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at Alexander Funeral Home Chapel of Ringling with Rev. Nick Ellis and Rev. Dennis Hawkins officiating. Interment will follow at the Ringling Memorial Cemetery. Services are under the direction and care of Alexander Funeral Home of Ringling.

Vernie was born February 22, 1924 at Center Point to Mr. Acel Jefferson and Mrs. Lucy Ethel (Dillon) Hawkins. He departed this life Saturday October 20, 2012 at the Sulphur VA Center.

Vernie, as a young boy attended school at Center Point. He worked in the fields as a young boy, and then went to work for Tom Lowry on his farm. He married the former Ms. Doris Mae Camplain October 17, 1942 at Wilson when he was 18 and was soon called to duty in the U.S. Army and served in the 29th division. He fought in the European Theater during WWII and landed at Omaha Beach and participated in “D Day”. He served for 2 ½ years and was honorably discharged in 1945.

Vernie tried his hand at farming after the Army and attended FFA Class which taught farming at night. In 1950 through1953 he worked on the construction of Hwy 81. In 1953, Vernie moved his family back to Center Point, where he began doing dozer work for different men before going into business for himself.

Vernie was pastor at the Church of Jesus Christ on East Main Street for 25 years. After developing an illness he has spent the remaining years of his life in the Sulphur Oklahoma Veterans Center.

Preceding him in death is his lovely wife of 60 years, Doris; His grandmother, Winnie Wade; Parents, Jeff and Ethel Hawkins; His Sisters, Leota Acox and Waunita Hartsell; Brothers, W.H. “Buster” Hawkins and A.J. Hawkins; Half Brother, Mac Hawkins and two half sisters, Opal and Laura and Granddaughter, Charity.

Survivors include his Daughters, Verna Roberts and husband Dub of Ringling, and Lana King and husband Gerald of Baytown, TX. Three Sons, Gary L. Hawkins and wife Sue, Larry J. Hawkins and wife Pat, all of Ardmore, and Jeffrey K. Hawkins and wife Donna of Dayton, TX. 21 Grandchildren, numerous Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandchildren and Step Grandchildren; Nieces Linda and Sandra Hawkins; Nephews Dennis and Donnie Hawkins and also a nephew whom Vernie raised from the age of 10, Don Miller; Numerous other nephews, nieces, cousins and other family.

Pallbearers will be Grandsons.

Family visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm Monday evening at the funeral home in Ringling.
