J.Q. Porter

Orr- Funeral Services for Mr. J.Q. Porter, Jr., 94, of Ringling are scheduled for 2:00 PM Friday June 27, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Ringling with Rev. Mike Williams officiating. Interment will follow at the Orr Cemetery in Orr. Services are under the direction and care of Alexander Funeral Home of Ringling.


J.Q. was born May 12, 1920 at Union Hill to the late Mr. John Quincy Porter, Sr. and Mrs. Winnie Melinda (Bonifield) Porter. He departed this life Tuesday evening June 24, 2014 at the Ardmore Veterans Center.


J.Q. attended school at Union Hill and resided nearby on a farm where he worked with his father. He married the former Ms. Joyce Shelton on August 2, 1941 at Wilson. Soon after, J.Q. was drafted into the United States Army during WWII. He was part of the 45th Armored Division, serving mainly in the European Campaign within an armored TANK. J.Q. received his honorable discharge on December 2 of 1945 and immediately returned home to his family and resided at Orr. Living back home, J.Q. began farming and ranching with his grandfather. He also worked for Lone Star Gas Company retiring after 30 years of employment as a bookkeeper. J.Q. diligently provided record keeping and care taking of Orr Cemetery since 1961. He always enjoyed farming and ranching and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ringling.

His wife Joyce preceded him in death on Dec. 16, 1982. Also preceding J.Q. in death are his Parents, John and Winnie Porter; Brothers and sisters in law, Kimbell and Marie Porter, Wilfred and Letrice Porter, Guy and Ruby Porter; Sisters and Brothers in law, Addie and Marvin Russel, Audie and Virgil Lambeth, Hazel Dunford - Wyche and her first husband Melvin Dunford and her second husband Robert Earl Wyche.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Marie Sessions of Ringling; Daughter, Janis Herrington and husband Herman of Ringling; Son, Mike Porter and wife Paulette of Mustang; 5 Grandchildren, PeeWee Herrington and wife Vicki of Purcell, Jay Herrington and Sheila Hicks of Orr, Wendy Alvarez and husband Willie of Wichita Falls, TX, Carri Baldwin of Yukon and Robert Johnson, also of Yukon; 14 Great Grandchildren and 8 Great Great Grandchildren. Numerous other family, church family and friends.


Casket Bearers are Brent Wade, Brandon Wade, Beau Johnson, PeeWee Herrington, Jay Herrington and Jacob Herrington.

Honorary Bearers are Bryce Ledford, George Odom, Herman Herrington and Joe L. Roberts.

Family visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Thursday evening at Alexander Funeral Home of Ringling.
